The National Museum of Japanese History collects and preserves materials concerning Japanese history from prehistory days to the present. Its collection includes historical documents, archaeological discoveries, and folklore materials. It is known for creating precise reproductions of Shosoin documents. It constitutes a research institute organisation, NIHU, with other research institutions.

The National Institute of Japanese Literature is a research institution for Japanese classical literature. Similar to other institutions part of the NIHU, the institute collects and documents materials relevant to its mission nationwide. The institute provides resources including edited texts and bibliographic data regarding Japanese classical literature, ranging from literary works to performances, noble to humble, antiquity to the pre-modern era (some are listed below).

The National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics is the only national institution devoted to this kind of research. The institute offers online resources including historical and contemporary written and spontaneous corpora, bibliographic data for Japanese linguistics and language education, and dialectological maps (some are listed below)
