The Laures database has been revised from Laures’s seminal descriptive catalogue (1951, 2nd ed.). On the other hand Virtual Library displays rare materials belonging to the university’s Kirishitan Bunko collection.

The Nagasaki Shipping List and Advertiser, founded in 1861, is the first English newspaper in Japan. The archive provides digitised images of the newspaper; a full text search is also available.

Japan Centre for Asian Historical Records, National Archives of Japan digitises and exhibits governmental materials concerning Japan’s relationship with other Asian nations from the early Meiji period to the end of WWII. The National Archives of Japan, the Diplomatic Archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, and the National Institute for Defense Studies of the Ministry of Defense provide the materials. By default, images are provided in DjVu format: they can be switched to JPEG by clicking a button at the top right of the screen.

The database can be accessed by two methods: chronology and memoirs; however, neither of these options are provided in English. The database offers a chronology of the different fashions styles, which makes it possible to understand the styles according to different time periods

The Asia-Pacific Database on Intangible Cultural Heritage contains information about traditional performing arts including music, dance, theatre, puppet theatre, and others. It mainly provides descriptions and photographs; some video clips are also available.

Maps and Geology eng

The Japanese Historical Map Collection is a project of the C.V. Starr East Asian Library, University of California, Berkley; the project exhibits its rare collection of old Japanese maps, most of which were derived from the Mitsui Collection (which had a total of 2,300 maps). It includes maps dating from the late seventeenth century to the early twentieth century, covering Japan’s three largest cities (Edo, Kyoto, and Osaka) as well as other local cities and tourist maps. High-definition images are provided through the website; however, only low-definition images can be downloaded.
