It constitutes a research institute organisation, NIHU, with other research institutions.

National Institute of Japanese Literature
The National Institute of Japanese Literature is a research institution for Japanese classical literature. Similar to other institutions part of the NIHU, the institute collects and documents materials relevant to its mission nationwide. The institute provides resources including edited texts and bibliographic data regarding Japanese classical literature, ranging from literary works to performances, noble to humble, antiquity to the pre-modern era (some are listed below).
